Wooden bowls made of solid Koa wood are known as umeke in Hawaiian. Classic Koa bowls are a symbol of welcome and hospitality. Koa bowls have a place of honor in many homes throughout Hawaii. Koa bowls are highly prized by avid collectors who sometimes favor particular shapes, craftsmen, and tones of Koa wood.
In old Hawaii, umeke were hand carved from chunks of the broad stumps of magnificent Koa trees which grew across the Hawaiian Islands. In early times, there were no lathes to turn these majestic bowls. These bowls were all carved by hand.
Today a Koa bowl enhances the decor in any room. The Koa wood bowls are made by a Hawaiian lathe craftsman specifically for Martin & MacArthur. These Hawaiian bowls are all slightly different. The grain and color of the Koa wood varies in all bowls, which gives each bowl its individual character.
All of the koa bowls are handsome in their beauty and craftsmanship. We also have a wide variety of natural-edge, carved Koa wooden bowls. Our Big Island craftsman collects wood from dead koa trees and then carves these stunning bowls. Each one is different and original with the bowl's length ranging from 12 to 18 inches. Display your natural edge carved Koa bowl on your dining room table or coffee table. You can also serve food in it and it washes easily with soap and water.
We also have beautiful pine bowls that are crafted by the finest artisans in Hawaii. Many of these gorgeous pine bowls are translucent, allowing the light shine through in brilliant ways.
