Big Island craftsmen Tim and Tiffany Shafto create exquisite Koa platters, accented with tropical and exotic hardwoods for striking contrasts. Their style is an eclectic mix of influences from Asian, European, and American furnishings, although their primary influence is Mother Nature herself. No stains are used in their creations. The rich natural color contrasts and strong design elements make their work recognizable.
This 14" Koa platter titled "Currents" is made with a combination of Koa and other tropical hardwoods to create a translucent effect that is both unexpected and delightful.
The Shaftos moved to the Big Island from Kauai and are completely enchanted by the beauty of seeing koa trees growing. Tim became captivated by woodturning and was blessed to be given his first lessons from master wood turner, Dan DeLuz. He then spent six months apprenticing master wood turner, Elmer Adams, who was best known for his enormous wooden Mediterranean vases. Now Tim’s an award-winning wood turner in his own right.
