"Hapu 3" Marquetry Wall Art by Paul Schurch

Paul Schurch learned furniture making from an aging Italian master, who took in apprentices to ensure fine marquetry would survive to a new generation. For years, Paul traveled back to Italy for focused periods of tutelage with other masters, honing his abilities to start his own business. Marquetry is the art of covering a surface of wood with artistically rendered veneers. A picture or motif could easily be composed of thousands of separate pieces of wood.

Paul combines the traditional and the new. “I am deeply indebted to classical styles of marquetry, but love to incorporate new ideas in my work.”

The contrasting marquetry wall art pieces were created using two veneers, Hawaiian Koa and Sen (Island Ash). Altering the wood grain direction and charring the inlay on selected pieces gives the image depth. The 34" x 84” panel is laminated into a light curve, allowing the chatoyant koa wood reflections to shimmer as one passes by. Both Day Palm and Night Palm have ‘curiosities’ built into the piece that makes it interesting, different and woven by human hands.

Prices listed are for in-stock furniture. Not all furniture shown in our website is in-stock. We can inform you if a furniture design is in-stock or not.  If it is not in-stock, it can be made-to-order. A new production surcharge of 10% may be added to the price.
