Mango Calabash by Paul PyzynaARTM43191
SHORT ARTIST BIO
December 16 2018
Paul Pyzyna’s earliest memories are of playing with woodblocks and sawdust. At age twelve he began working along side his father, learning the family trade of carpentry. He still has his grandfather’s plane and chisels, keeping them in a place of reverence.
European sensibility and cosmopolitan exposure engender Paul’s style of simple elegance in commissioned furniture and turned vessels. His turning skills and artistic eye were further developed under the guidance of David Ellsworth and Stuart Batty, internationally known wood turning artists. His recent move from Virginia to Maui due to an affaire of the heart brought his works to be exhibited and sold at the Hui No’eau visual Arts Center.
Creativity is a lively conversation between man and material. With a deep love of trees and understanding of the unique characteristics of woods, Paul often chooses to turn green wood and surrender the final shape of the hollow vessel to the whim of nature as it dries. His gift captures and exposes the natural beauty of wood in the design and lets it remind us of w hat is precious in life.
