As a native Hawaiian, Tamsen Fox embraces the culture and mystical spirit of the Hawaiian islands in creating her gourds. She expresses the beauty of everyday life in the Islands.
Niʻihau Swirl is made with a technique used by early Hawaiians to create tattoo designs. The Niʻihau Method creates a design by carving away the negative spaces surrounding the image being featured. The gourd is filled with iliahi bark dye which makes its way through to the carved outside surface creating the dark color after eight weeks. This is a 400 year old method indigenous to Hawaiians and never seen in any other ancient cultures.
Niʻihau Method gourds are very rare because these gourds are rarely grown on Oahu anymore. The Niihau method requires a fresh-off-the-vine-green gourd. If you are a collector of true Hawaiian art, this would be a prized possession in your Hawaiian Art collection.
