Maui artist Sarah Houglum honed her painting skills with her family. She first painted on the walls of her kids’ rooms, and then canvases for her home, the kids’ schools and cafeteria.

Along the way, she says she developed a passion for the natural beauty of her island home. Today, Sarah paints with watercolor and oil in her home studio on Maui. 

Sarah was inspired by the epic images of surfers paying homage to Lahaina after the tragic fire. Her “Paddle Out” series reflects the unique and individual lives affected by the Maui fire and the bond we all share in supporting a future Lahaina where art and culture thrive.

She says, “I am inspired by the peaceful beauty and rich tropical colors of the Hawaiian islands. I strive to reflect that in my artwork.”
