The Hawaii craftsmen of Martin & MacArthur create the Koa Slab Bench inspired by the designs of the George Nakashima, the renowned American furniture maker who was on of the leading innovators of 20th century furniture design and the father of the American craft movement. From his workshop in Pennsylvania, Nakashima created expressive furniture designs now synonymous with the best of 20th century American Art furniture.
Our master craftsmen select the finest slabs of curly Koa harvested from already fallen Koa trees on the Big Island. Martin & MacArthur never cuts down any Koa. In fact, we staunchly support Koa reforestation for future generations to enjoy. We pay homage to the Nakashima’s admiration for the natural beauty of wood and the juxtaposition of unexpectedly contrasting forms to create delightful asymmetry.
For over 60 years, we have been the fine Koa furniture makers of Hawaii. We only use Koa wood from previously fallen trees. We never cut down any trees. In fact, we are a leader in Koa reforestation in Hawaii.
